Kimmie Rhodes (1954) - "I'm Gonna Fly" from her album West Texas Heaven (1996). Kimmie is joined by the late great Townes Van Zandt on this beautiful song.. Music does not get much more Texas than this in my opinion. Kimmie is a native of Lubbock Texas, having joined other such musicians with a musical life in Austin. But no one ever really leaves Lubbock and her music has the nostalgia all of us former Lubbock folks feel for that part of the world, the land and people there. She deserves a much wider following than I believe she has received, but also like most Lubbockites, she seems a humble person, well grounded in what matters most in life, and chasing fame does not seem to be one of those things. Her song writing is showcased in this beautiful song which has always seemed to me to be like a painting of our passing from this life to the next, much like the gospel hymn "Ill fly Away." Give her music a listen starting with this album where she is joined by Texas greats, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Joe Ely and Townes Van Zandt.
